Name
Socio-emotional Learning in the Classroom
Description

About one in seven young people in BC struggle with mental health issues. We all want to support the mental well-being of our students and know that a student that is struggling with mental health issues is not thriving in the classroom. This workshop will discuss socio-emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom in the context of the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) model. The majority of the workshop will focus on Tier 1 strategies (universal supports) such as psychoeducation, growth mindset, Social Thinking, and Open Parachute. Tier 2 strategies such as small group instruction of students with similar needs will also be discussed. A case example of individualized Tier 3 SEL support will also be shared. The presenter hopes to facilitate an engaging, interactive discussion of incorporating SEL in the classroom - teachers, support staff and school counsellors are encouraged to participate.
